Dear Professor Young:
I found your "The Olympic Myth of Greek Amateur Athletics"
(unfortunately) on the remainder table at the U. Texas at Austin, Co-Op,
very interesting and entirely believable. I have two questions.
1. You recount that the explicit reference to social class in the
formal definition of "amateur" began with the Amateur Athletic Club
in 1866 and was dropped in the formation of the Amateur Athletic
Association in 1880. That's a short time. Do you have any references
to contemporary explicit argument on the point?
2. Can you point me to reviews of your book?
My interest in the matter is amateur in all but the second strongest
sense; I do take money for being a computer scientist, and I suppose
Coubertin or Brundage would consider computer science a parallel sport
to classics.
If you have time, and it's convenient, I would be grateful for a reply to
